The story behind the creation of This vs That, our airplane boarding experiment and collaboration with Dr. Jason Steffen (astro-physicist at the Fermi Lab in Chicago) will be featured on the premiere episode of NBC’s new prime time news magazine, Rock Center with Brian Williams. A broadcast date will be announced shortly.

International distribution giant, Beyond, will be offering    6 X :60 episodes of This vs That to the world wide television community at the upcoming Mip conference. Mip is the world’s leading entertainment content market. The event, in Cannes, France runs from October 3 to 6.

On June 23, 2011 ThisvsThat set out to determine which flotation device, the life vest or the seat cushion, is more likely to save your life in the event you survive an airplane ditching, like the one on the Hudson River, in 2009. Joining us for this unique experience and experiment was Ben Bostic, a survivor of US Air’s flight 1549, along with former United Airlines Captain Ross Aimer (40 years experience), and Brian Hayvaz from AirCare FACTS Training International, the national leaders in preparing  flight crews and passengers to survive an aircraft emergency. Special thanks go out to the 20 people who agreed to participate in our experiments, the on-set doctor and EMT… and the guy who lasted nearly 3 minutes in 41 degree water (the same temperature as the Hudson River on January 15th, 2009) in order to demonstrate the onset of hypothermia. On June 7th, 2011, 100 people participated in a first of its kind experiment to determine the fastest way to board passengers onto a plane. Dr. Jason Steffen, an astro-physicist from Chicago’s famed Fermi Lab joined the ThisvsThat team to supervise this unique endeavor. In 2008, Dr. Steffen proposed an optimal boarding method that would reduce by 40% the time it takes to board passengers onto a plane. Not only would this improve passenger experience, it would save the airline industry more than a billion dollars. The results of Dr. Steffen’s computer simulation garnered headlines around the world. Did this first of its kind real world trial with real people boarding a plane authenticate his results, or cast them in doubt? Stay tuned… the results will be revealed when ThisvsThat premieres this August.
